What have you put in your way today that has
slowed you down from getting all you wanted to get done so far?
Maybe it was nothing. Maybe you're doing it right now as you read this
newsletter.
If you can recognize what you put in your way,
what you use as a distraction, and what you allow yourself to do instead
of that thing you really need to do, you can then choose not to do that
thing the next time it becomes tempting. To first know your distraction
is key to eliminating it and getting back on task.
I had an athlete I was working with who was distracted by the
same thing each time she competed. After each race she would look at
her time and think 'I have to do more/better next time'. She was
already in the lead, but looking at her time distracted her from doing
what she knew to do. The result: trying harder caused her to fall in
her next race.
So what did we do? We removed the distraction,
had her stop looking at her time until the day was over and asked her
teammates not to tell her her time. The result of removing the
distraction: she didn't fall and she started winning races.
It was a simple fix, and it made a huge difference.
So, what are your distractions: in sport and in life? Figure
out how you can block them and your performance will soar to new
heights.
