Improving your fitness starts with another 'F' word. No, it's not that one, although I seem to mutter that under my breath when I'm holding bridge in hot yoga. The word I'm talking about is Fun. Find a fitness event that is fun for you! If you don't like the gym, that's fine, if you don't like fitness classes, that's fine too, if you'd rather climb a wall or shoot paint at people to get your fitness-on, then do that. Either way, find something that'll get you active while having fun. Then you’ll keep doing it.
As an athlete, think about activities you can do that will help train your sport. For example, I always suggest that my volleyball athletes do sprint-interval cardio because the game is just that: sprint and stop and sprint and stop. The average volleyball ralley at a high level is only 20s, so I suggest they sprint for 20s and then jog for 40s for a duration of 20min (the average length of the match). And, if they don’t want to sprint, they can do it on a spinning bike or on roller blades or even on a stand-up paddle board. Or, you can go to the park and do agility exercises that mimic the movements in your sport, and do them in a sprint to active rest ratio that mimics your sport.
