by experience, which is the bitterest."
- Confucius
So true! I've always said that we can learn so much through imitation and reflection, and yes I have definitely felt the bitterness of personal toil through experience.
I also believe we can learn through the experience of others, which isn't nearly as bitter. That's why, even thought I'm not a pro athlete any more, I continue to have my own personal coach!
I don't know about you, I would much prefer learning by imitation, and by experiencing defeat through another's eyes instead of my own, then by trial and error. With the latter, it can sometimes feel like you're banging your head off the wall, no matter which way you turn. And, it can waste a lot of time too.
This is why this week's performance pointer is dedicated to tapping into other people's experience, imitating what's working for them and avoiding what's not.
As a High Performer, you want to improve your 'game' as quickly and as painlessly as possible and the best way I know to do so is by tapping into other people's experience. It's why we as athletes hire a coach in the first place: because they know more, can see more, and can use their experience to support your development. And, if you want help in the development of your mental game, you can always hire me (lol! a little plug for what I do;).
But there's more you can do than that. Research on the internet. Choose your role models and read up on what they've done. Send them an email. Ask questions. Research your success in the way that an scientist researches a cure. Be relentless. Be a student of your sport and of the successes in your sport. The more information you know, the more experience you learn from others, the better prepared you are to tackle any obstacle and to achieve your ultimate performance.
Want to take this even further? Of course you do! Last week I talked about the Power of Visualization. The next step is to visualize other people's experience, and see it as your own in your mind. See you accomplishing what they did as they did it. Use the visualization download I gave you last week to support you.
The more your ask questions and the more you are open to learning from others, the faster you will achieve your peak performance.
So if you need me, you know where to reach me.
