This is a pretty cool
week for me as I turn 33 - a lucky year, both because I'm 3-3, and also
because '3' was my lucky number from as young as I can remember. From
the age of 6, when I first started playing soccer, my number was 3.
When I put on that jersey, I felt powerful and unstoppable. I would
weave my way through the other team and dominate the game wearing the
number 3.
When I switched to
volleyball in high school, my number switched with me. This time I
chose my favourite number 5, and that number was equally as powerful.
Why? Because I said so. I chose the number and in so choosing, I chose
what it would mean to me: power, confidence, luck.
Therein lies the power of superstition:
that it's lucky because you say it is. You choose your confidence in
your stating that your routine, ritual, thoughts, and even your number
give you an advantage. Whether you call that advantage luck or power or
comfort, all those feelings provide for you a great starting point from
which to take action.
Think about it, if you
start you performance feeling powerful, lucky or comfortable, how do you
think you will perform? Exactly, you will have this inner state of 'of
course I can' and your actions will be in line with this inner state
you have created, with how you are feeling.
Consequently, if you state something to
be unlucky, that's what it will be to you.
I no longer wear the number 3 on my chest,
but as it is my '3-3' year I will be wearing it all year long and so I
state today that this year will be my luckiest most powerful year yet.
Really, the numbers don't matter, what makes the difference is how I
say it will go.
So, what thoughs,
routines or rituals do you have that are making you feel powerful,
confident, lucky? Keep doing those. And which have you feeling
unlucky, powerless or fearful? Stop those.
Or simply state how you say it will go
moving forward from today.
