We all have fears. Fears are necessary to keep us out of danger. However, when these fears stop us from doing what we want to do because of what might happen, they can definitely limit our growth.
The trick is to first recognize that fear is natural and to accept any fears you might have. If the fear in question is necessary for your survival, then it makes sense to listen to it. If, however, the fear is holding you back from your full potential, it is time to address the fear head on.
Ask yourself 'What am I most afraid of?'. Be honest with and do not judge your response. Remember, fear is natural albeit dysfunctional at times. All great conquests bring with them an element of fear, so once you've identified what that fear is for you, the next step is to do the prep work to increase your confidence. It is said that it takes 10,000 hours to become a master at something. Part of that mastery I believe is in trusting what you know you can do, so that fear isn't as much in your face.
The more you trust your skills, the more you can say: 'Thank you fear for looking out for me, but I don't need you. I've trained for this for years, all I need now is to trust my body will do what it needs to do when I need it to do it!'
And if you're not at 10,000 hours yet, don't worry. Most of us aren't and we are still tremendously skilled. Take a moment and calculate the hours you've put into your sport or specialty, and even the hours you've put into it just this week! The number will amaze you.
The fact is, you are ready now. Tell fear you don't need him anymore in your performance. Trust all those hours you've dedicated to your sport or skill.
Last week I had said we would cover the Becoming Your Power Animal Strategy, I've decided to move that to next weeks pointer, since it also helps with overcoming fear. You're not going to want to miss next weeks pointer, so stay tuned.
